busy little elf

Hello Everyone! I know there has been a lag on my blog, but I have been a busy little elf with holiday cards and invitations. A big thank you to all my clients for keeping me extra busy these last two months!!!

I just love this time of year. I especially love all the celebrations. Nashville has wonderful events, but one event I miss the most is from my home state of California. Southern California has the best boat parades and my favorite is the Naples Boat Parade in Long Beach. Not only do all the residents decorate their beautiful boats and gondolas, but you can walk along the canals and visit all the gorgeous decorated homes. This year I had the opportunity to design a party invitation for the night of parade (names and address changed to protect the innocent). Thank you guys for letting me feel like I was still back at home...at least in spirit.

Hello my name is Jackie...and I'm a font-aholic.

I am a font junkie. If I have a few extra dollars in my pocket, I run to my computer and purchase fonts. I keep trying to justify my obsession with the following mantra, "More pretty fonts will bring me more work. More work will pay for more pretty fonts." It's a vicious cycle. Below are my latest obsessions that I have been dreaming about. If I can't find someone soon to sponsor my habit, I may be forced to hit a new low... asking Santa.

Fan Script by Ale Paul of Sutipos. My favorite typographer.
Snowflake by Jessica Hische. Drool.
Origins by Laura Worthington. OMG! Pretty!
History by Peter Bil'ak of  Typotheque. Just look at the floral lettering!
Skunkling by Jason Jones. Jason entered this font design in the Design*Sponge Design Your Own Alphabet Contest. The contest is over and the font is not for sale, but I cast my vote for him to win because I am first in line when he's ready to sell!

And remember, ONLY THREE MORE DAYS to enter in the My Design Booth Facebook Holiday Challenge for your chance to win a free holiday card design. All you have to do to enter is select "Like" to become a friend of My Design Booth and spread the word! The challenge is to get at least 100 friends by Monday, November 22nd!

evolution of an invitation

As a designer, I see any work that may come my way not only as a blessing (little does each client know that they are a much appreciated sponsor of my daughter's gymnastic classes), but as a form of therapy. Designing makes me happy. And if I were to do only one type of design for the rest of my life, I would choose invitation design. I love working with themes, and colors, and tapping into the personality of the client to help make their event truly memorable.

Below is a sample of one of my recent favorite invitations (hey, all my designs are my favorites). It's for an incentive trip awards banquet. The theme was "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" inspired with a touch of "White Queen" elegance. I always design 2-3 concepts of an invitation for variety which is the easiest part of the process. The hardest part is answering the question "So which one do you like best?".

wonderland by the sea invitation

I love to design for events and here is a look at what I had been working on lately for a big incentive trip to Hawaii. I'll be posting other work from this project soon, but this "Wonderland by the Sea" invitation is one of my favorites. I am so in love with this Hula Dancing Mermaid Girl. Let me know what you think!

I’ve had several people ask me who did the illustration on Dean’s Birth Announcement. I wish I could say it was all me, but that is the art of the fabulously talented Nowa Yu. Nowa is not only a wonderful illustrator and graphic designer, but she is also a great friend. Her children’s portraits are amazing and all she needs is a favorite photograph to start. If you are interested in having an illustration or watercolor made of your child, family, bridal portrait, pet, what have you, please contact Nowa at nowayu1472@hotmail.com. The holidays are coming up! What a special gift that would be!!

Some of you may or may not know that I have a lot of family in Canada, eh. I also have quite a few transplant friends here in the states. As I am designing my holiday card collection this year, I wanted a card that they could share with family, friends and ex-pats and still have a connection to their roots. So the Canadian Mitten card was born. Thank you Vancouver for the inspiration.

My Custom Holiday Card Collection goes on sale on October 18th.

A Wax Free October

I was invited by Neil Bernhart to make a logo for the inaugural launch of his charitable site, Octobeardfest. From the site: “What is this all about, you ask? Quick answer: Grow a beard in the month of October to help raise funds and support for cancer research. We’re all about raising funds for cancer research as well as raising awareness and showing support. If there’s one way a guy can get attention, it’s to grow some sort of beard for a whole month. You are almost certain to get a reaction out of people; some will hate it and some will love it. Either way, you’ve got their attention.”

I am so honored to be involved in this project. Please visit the site and help spread the word and see if we can raise some funds and awareness. GROW SOME [facial hair] & SHOW SOME [support]. Here is the logo.
